Lack of insurance knowledge can be costly for younger Canadians

(NC)-Many younger Canadians don't understand their insurance needs. A recent RBC Insurance/Ipsos Reid survey found that over one third (38 per cent) of Canadians between the ages of 18-34 don't know if they even have the right amount or type of insurance.

Here are a few insurance tips to think about as you start out on your own.

• Renting a home - Tenant insurance is useful if you are renting a home, going away to school or want to protect expensive items like electronics or jewellery. It may cover you in the event of a fire or break-in or if someone is injured on your property.

• Buying a new or used car - The type of car you drive, age and where you live can all affect the cost of your auto insurance premium. Shop around for insurance before buying your new car to avoid any costly surprises. Also look at bundling your auto policy with home insurance for even more savings.

• Dealing with a serious illness - A critical illness insurance policy can be less expensive when you're young and - if you're diagnosed with a critical illness - it can provide a lump sum payment so that you can focus on your recovery.

• Heading out on vacation - A vacation is a great time to get away from it all, but don't forget to buy travel insurance for any unforeseen mishaps. Out-of-country medical costs, cancelled or delayed flights and baggage loss or delays can cost you thousands of dollars.
