In this highly illustrated presentation, astronomy author Terence Dickinson begins with the stars and constellations seen on a clear night from his backyard in rural Ontario, then reveals the grandeur of the universe as seen through telescopes and by satellites and space probes. The program includes tips on personal astronomy and advice on buying your own telescope. The event also includes a book signing and books will be on sale.

This lecture is held in conjunction with AADL's new telescope lending program! Seven Orion StarBlast 4.5 Astro Reflector telescopes, designed for entry level and intermediate astronomy enthusiasts, are now available for check-out at the Library. A former staff astronomer at Toronto's McLaughlin Planetarium and the Strasenburgh Planetarium in Rochester, N.Y., Terence Dickinson is a leading astronomy author with two million copies of his 14 books in print. His book "NightWatch" has been the bestselling stargazing guidebook in the world for more than a decade according to Publisher's Weekly. In 1996 Steven Spielberg purchased the motion picture rights to his book "Extraterrestrials." He is also the editor of SkyNews, Canada's national popular astronomy magazine.

Diagnosing Rankism:
Measuring and Improving Intimidating Behaviors at Work

Keynote Address
By Dr. Valerie L. Myers

Diversity challenges are more nuanced than we first thought. The challenges are not just about demographic difference per se, but about rankism -- that is, how status differences and power are misused, resulting in intimidating behaviors at work. Where does rankism occur? Everywhere.

Dr. Myers developed the "Rankism and Regard Climate Assessment"© in response to the growing problem of intimidating behaviors in healthcare that threaten patient safety. In addition to sharing findings from her research of 1000+ employees in Southeast Michigan Hospitals, she will describe Positive Organizing strategies that can remedy rankism in any industry. During this interactive presentation, attendees will gain tools and learn practical skills to challenge rankism and improve their work climate.

"Rankism" Case Study Role Play
Facilitated by Dr. Deborah Orlowski

The post-keynote activity will support and re-enforce the presented material by the demonstration of two or three "typical" situations role-played by U-M community members. Audience members will be able to analyze the scenarios through small group work, as well as through question and answer. By the end of the role play, audience members will have had an opportunity to further their knowledge of rankism and will also take away additional skills needed to practice combating rankism.

We are looking for 20 minute and 5 minutes talks and will be looking for hackfest and workshop proposals: please sign up on the code4lib wiki. We will try to accomodate all suggestions, if possible.

The last Code4Lib gathering had dedicated an entire day for a hackfest. The organization committee would like your feedback on two variations that we are considering:

1. mornings are spent on presentations and afternoons are spent on hackfests and workshops
2. workshops occur concurrently during hackfest time
